Wheel of Fortune: What This Card Actually Means

Wheel of Fortune is the card of change you did not schedule. It is not fate handing you a prize. It is the turn of a cycle, and what you do at the top of it. Here is what it shows.

Wheel of Fortune is the card people want to see because it sounds like luck. It is about change, but not the change you get to choose. It is the turn of a cycle you are caught in, and the question of how you ride it.

What the image shows

A great wheel in the sky, figures on its rim rising and falling, a sphinx on top, a snake descending, a jackal-headed figure rising. The picture is a cycle in motion, with no one fully in control of it.

Upright: the turn that is happening

Upright, Wheel of Fortune describes a shift in circumstances that is already underway and not of your making. A change in luck, in timing, in the conditions around your question. The card is not saying it is good or bad. It is saying the wheel is moving, so adjust to the new position.

Reversed: the turn resisted, or the same loop

Reversed, it often means you are fighting a change that has already happened, or repeating a cycle you keep ending up in. It can mean a turn that has stalled, where the situation feels frozen and you are waiting for it to move again.

How to use it

The wheel is a reminder that conditions change without your permission, and that the skill is not controlling the wheel but noticing where you are on it. See the full card meaning, or ask the cards where the cycle is in your situation.
