Strength: What This Card Actually Means

Strength is not force. It is the quiet mastery of something wild, usually your own fear or temper. Here is what the card shows, and why it is one of the gentlest cards in the deck.

Strength is the card people expect to be about power, and it is, but not the kind they mean. It is not about winning. It is about the quiet, patient mastery of something wild inside you.

What the image shows

A woman in white, calm, one hand resting gently on the jaw of a lion, an infinity symbol above her head. The picture is not a struggle. The lion is not being forced. It is being soothed.

Upright: gentleness as strength

Upright, Strength describes a situation where the strong move is the soft one. Patience instead of pressure. Compassion toward your own fear instead of shame about it. The card often appears when you are trying to force an outcome, and the reading is saying: the lion responds to calm, not to a whip.

Reversed: force where gentleness was needed

Reversed, it can mean you are pushing too hard at something that needed patience, or that self-doubt has gotten the better of you. It can also mean the lion is running the show, anger or fear acting without your consent. The card asks whether you are leading the instinct or being led by it.

How to use it

Strength is one of the gentlest cards in the deck, and the most demanding. It asks you to be kind to the part of you that is afraid, because that part is not the enemy. See the full card meaning, or ask the cards where the strength is being tested in your situation.
